A major gold smuggling attempt was reportedly foiled at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport when customs authorities intercepted an Indian passenger arriving from Sharjah. Officials recovered approximately 2.755 kilograms of gold valued at around ₹3.8 crore.
According to preliminary reports, the gold had been converted into paste form and concealed inside two black pouches. Investigators said the pouches were hidden beneath a seat in an effort to avoid detection during routine security and customs checks.
The passenger was detained immediately after officials discovered the concealed material. Following examination and verification, authorities confirmed that the recovered substance contained a significant quantity of gold.
Customs and security agencies have initiated a detailed investigation to determine the source of the gold, the intended recipients, and whether the accused was part of a larger smuggling network operating between the Gulf region and India.
Gold smuggling remains a persistent challenge for enforcement agencies due to high import duties and strong domestic demand. Airports across India regularly conduct surveillance and intelligence-based operations to curb illegal imports of precious metals.
Officials have stated that further legal action will be taken based on the findings of the ongoing investigation.
