Maharashtra Government Acquires Iconic Air India Building in Mumbai for ₹1,601 Crore

In a major real-estate and administrative move, the Maharashtra government has purchased the iconic Air India Building located at Nariman Point, Mumbai, for ₹1,601 crore. The deal was completed with Air India Assets Holding Limited (AIAHL), which managed the property after Air India’s privatization.
The 23-storey structure has been one of Mumbai’s most recognizable landmarks since its construction in 1974. Situated in the prestigious Nariman Point business district and facing the Arabian Sea, the building has long been associated with India’s aviation history.
According to officials, the state government plans to use the property to accommodate multiple government departments and offices. The acquisition is expected to help centralize administrative operations while making use of a strategically located commercial property.
The building also holds historical significance. It was among the structures affected during the 1993 Mumbai serial bomb blasts, one of India’s most tragic terror attacks.
Experts believe the purchase reflects the government’s long-term strategy to secure premium office space in Mumbai’s central business district. The acquisition is also expected to enhance the state’s administrative infrastructure while preserving a landmark structure that remains an important part of Mumbai’s skyline.
