Physics Wallah faces ₹263 crore tax demand, plans to challenge order

Physics Wallah, one of India’s rapidly growing edtech platforms, has been served a tax demand order amounting to ₹263.34 crore by the Income Tax Department. The notice pertains to the assessment year 2023 to 24 and has raised significant attention within the startup and education sectors.
According to the company’s official filing, the tax authority has classified certain investments received from investors, including SEBI registered Category II Alternative Investment Funds, as taxable income. This interpretation has led to the substantial demand raised against the company.
Physics Wallah has responded by stating that it does not agree with the assessment and will take legal steps to challenge the order. The company plans to file an appeal before the appropriate appellate authority, seeking a review and resolution of the matter.
This development highlights the increasing scrutiny faced by startups in India, especially regarding funding structures and tax classifications. The outcome of this case could have broader implications for how investment inflows into startups are treated under tax regulations.
