In a major move to strengthen toll compliance, the Government of India has amended rules related to unpaid highway tolls across the country. As per the new regulations, any commuter who fails to pay toll charges will now be liable to pay a penalty amount that is double the original toll fee. This step aims to reduce violations and ensure smoother operations on national highways.
To make enforcement more efficient, the government has introduced a digital notification system. Defaulters will receive e notices through multiple channels including SMS, email, and popular messaging platforms like WhatsApp. This ensures that users are informed quickly and can take action without delay.
Additionally, strict consequences have been introduced for non compliance. If the penalty amount is not paid within 15 days of receiving the notice, the defaulter may lose access to essential vehicle related services provided through the VAHAN portal. This could impact services such as registration, permits, and other transport related facilities.
The new rules are expected to improve toll collection efficiency, reduce revenue losses, and promote digital enforcement mechanisms. Authorities believe this step will encourage commuters to follow rules and adopt digital payment systems for hassle free travel on highways.
